The limit for thumbnail size is 2MB. I usually make my own thumbnails at either 1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720 myself. This allows the downscale done by YouTube to be in high quality. Our thumbnails appear across a variety of platforms and in various sizes as well - depending on the platform.
When a subscriber receives an email that a video has just been uploaded or published, the thumbnail shows up quite large and I want mine to show up clear and in as high a quality as possible. I found that if I make a thumbnail that is in small dimensions on the upload, it usually looks skewed and low quality in the aforementioned scenario.
The thumbnail resource I am showing in this post was created for anyone to use and includes the PSD so that any changes deemed necessary by the user are able to be performed. So, if you have a preference to make your thumbnails in a smaller size and dimensions you are freely able to do so.
